Five things that the Packers should (but probably won't) do this offseason...

I'm a Packers fan, and as such will be mostly blogging about the Packers and the NFL. I'm not a big fan of their GM, Ted Thompson, mostly because of the Favre debacle, but also for other minor irritations and offenses. For instance, drafting Justin Harrell at no. 16 overall. Who's Justin Harrell, you ask? My point exactly.

On that note, here's 5 things that the Packers should, but probably won't, do this offseason:

1. Sign a defensive free agent that's coming out of a 3-4 scheme...

Why does Ted Thompson hate signing someone you've heard of in free agency? Apart from Charles Woodson, TT hasn't signed anyone notable ever. Well, they're gonna need to this year. They're switching to a new defensive scheme, and they're gonna need a noteworthy player that knows how to play in the 3-4. By the time I post this, though, most of the good ones will be gone (Bart Scott).
2. Resist stockpiling 7th round draft picks...

"Trader Ted" is known for trading down in the draft. Why? My theory: 1. He wants to be the guy that drafted the guy you never heard of and now he's a pro bowler and Ted looks like a genius....OR 2. He actually believes that there's oodles of talent in the 7th round.
3. Draft Knowshon Moreno, Shonn Greene, or Michael Crabtree if they're available...

Um, I just think any of those guys is gonna be really good in the NFL. I heard a sportscaster say earlier this week that he thought Greene would be better than Moreno in the NFL. I don't know about that, but I think any of those guys would be a real nice addition to the Packers offense.

4. Resist trading out of the first round...

TT loves to trade down, but this year he has the no. 9 overall pick. Top ten picks are expensive so if he trades down I wouldn't blame him, but he should make sure that he still gets a pick in the first round. So maybe he could get a low first round and a later round or next year draft choice. Why? Because it drives me nuts when I sit there waiting, drooling over who's left, only to have it flash across the screen: Pick traded to such and such. Keep it in the first round TT.
5. Resist taking a defense player with their first overall pick...

They're already going to have an entire team full of guys that don't know/have never played in a 3-4 defense. The last thing they need is a high round rookie who's trying to learn how to be an NFL player and learn a new defense with a group of guys that are also struggling to learn a new defense. Take an offense player and get a guy who won't be learning a new system without anyone around him to explain things to him.

We've started a blog

So me and my brother have decided to start a sports blog. If there's anything we could talk all day about, it's sports. The point of our blog is to create an intelligent forum that discusses all things sports (but let's be realistic here, we mostly talk football). Other than most forums, where most discussions about sports quickly degenerate into arguments about each others mothers, we hope this blog is somewhere where sports is the only thing discussed here. Since neither of us have the time to single-handedly manage a blog and because we want to use this blog as a place to discuss with each other about sports, all the posts here are going to be written by either myself (Spencer) or my brother, Bryce. With all this being said, I hope this is the beginning of something good.
